A Brooklyn Park man involved in the chase that led to the murder of a 15-year-old boy last year has been sentenced to more than a dozen years behind bars. Shawn Kellin Goodloe, 20, was handed down a 12½-year sentence (150 months) on Monday, according to KSTP. The sentence accounts for the 348 days Goodloe has already spent in custody.

Goodloe pleaded guilty to a charge of aiding an offender last month in an agreement that saw prosecutors agree to not charge him with murder — a plea deal that led to his sentencing at the upper end of the sentencing range. The incident itself occurred on January 13, 2023, when Dwayne Scott Dzubay-Percy was shot and killed behind the wheel of a Kia Soul. The violent encounter was followed by a crash in the 4000 block of Dupont Avenue North after a ShotSpotter activation detected up to 14 gunshots, court documents indicated.

Minneapolis police pieced together the deadly sequence of events with the help of witnesses and surveillance footage. It showed a silver van, driven by Goodloe, in hot pursuit of the Kia moments before the gunfire and subsequent crash. While Goodloe admitted to driving the van, he was not accused of firing the shots that killed the teenager. The alleged shooter, Fabian Scott, is currently facing a separate murder charge in a North Dakota prison, FOX9 reported.

In a turn of events that could only be termed as adding insult to injury, the sentencing also took into consideration an incident where Goodloe and his acquaintances defaced Dzubay-Percy's memorial, stealing balloons and shouting insults about the victim, actions they then brazenly shared on social media. "It hurt. That just showed right there, they did not care. They killed my son at night and the next day, they were taking the balloons from his memorial and posting the pictures on Instagram," the victim's father, Brett Dzubay-Percy, told FOX9. In the courtroom, Goodloe's defense argued for a sentence closer to 10 years; however, Hennepin County District Court Judge Jay Quam sided with the prosecution on the lengthier sentence.

Goodloe's prison time will be followed by supervised release, and as part of the plea agreement, he's expected to bear witness at Fabian Scott's future trial. For the family of Dwayne Dzubay-Percy, whose potential was tragically cut short, the quest for justice continues amidst their mourning.
