
Firefighters tackled a blaze at the historic American Twine Building in East Cambridge with swift precision. The fire, which broke out shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday, was met with an aggressive response from 25 firefighters who managed to contain and extinguish the flames before they could cause significant damage to the structure, according to Cambridge Fire Department reports.
Efficiently battling the adverse weather conditions, a team consisting of Engines 3, 5, and 2, Ladders 2 and 3, Squads 3 and 2, Rescue 1, and Division 1, responded to Box 1681 at 222 Third Street. With a temperature of 17 degrees and 12 mph winds at the time of the incident kicked in, the fire crews displayed their preparedness and skill.
The blaze was identified in the ceiling of the second floor of the large, heavy-timber constructed commercial building. The Cambridge Fire Department reported that the fire was "quickly contained and extinguished," commending the coordinated interior attack executed by the firefighters.
As the fire was being subdued, Professional EMS units stood by on the scene. Cambridge Police officers, aiding for the sake of safety in traffic control, diverted traffic away from hose lines spread across the streets. Additionally, representatives from Cambridge Inspectional Services were present at the scene, engaged in evaluating the aftermath of the fire.
Group 4 of the Cambridge Fire Department was on duty during the incident, ensuring that the response was not only rapid but also effective in preventing what could have been a disaster, had it been left to spread unchecked.
