Thieves are increasingly targeting cars at Austin's airport, leaving travelers to return to empty parking spots where their vehicles should have been. The Austin Police Department data indicates a worrying uptrend in vehicle thefts from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, with 230 reports logged from 2018 to 2023, according to KVUE.

Despite surveillance measures, these incidents have shaken confidence in airport security, with officials acknowledging the issue and iterating that all parking lots are actively monitored by CCTV cameras. A spokesperson from the airport said, "All parking lots and garages are equipped with CCTV cameras that monitor the operations 24/7. Airport and ABIA Parking staff assist Austin police with their investigations into crime at the airport," as per KVUE.

Digging deeper into the narrative, a nearly doubled increase in car thefts in 2023 compared to the previous peak year of 2022, with the majority occurring in a designated garage offering overnight parking. Josh Teeters shared his ordeal after discovering his 2021 Dodge Ram TRX was stolen and later found damaged in a Houston ship channel. "You shouldn’t have to be concerned that your vehicle is going to be stolen when you’re on a trip," Teeters said, reported by KXAN.

With less than a 1% rate of theft, the airport's spokesperson described the threat as small, yet acknowledged it as a serious concern. As the police and airport authorities grapple with the issue, they urge anyone affected by theft to report incidents by calling APD or the airport communications line, as stated by KVUE.
