
The New Year has scarcely unfolded, yet the California Highway Patrol - Hayward is already reporting swift action against illegal activity on the streets. According to their Facebook page, officers managed to get their hands on some illegal weaponry and detained a driver under suspicion of DUI on the first day of 2024.
The incident unfolded when a white Dodge Charger was pulled over for speeding along I-880, close to Auto Mall Parkway. Officers, including Sergeant Lehr, Officer Mangalathil, and his Field Training Officer Officer Cristalinas, were involved in the traffic stop that quickly escalated into a DUI evaluation. The driver of the Charger couldn't escape the law, as Officer Mangalathil proceeded to arrest them on grounds of DUI. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a trove of weapons, revealing more than just driving infractions.
In a post shared by CHP - Hayward, the officers detailed finding a Glock 17 and a loaded magazine in the glove compartment, and a second loaded magazine hiding behind the rear passenger seat. Sergeant Lehr added to the findings with a discovery of brass knuckles located inside of the Dodge Charger.
The nocturnal traffic stop quickly turned into a criminal offense roundup as authorities confiscated the illegal items. "Great job team!," praised the CHP - Hayward in their Facebook post. The driver, whose holiday revelries were cut short, was transported to Santa Rita County Jail facing DUI charges, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of brass knuckles.
