A quiet evening in Cohasset turned harrowing as a family's 55-pound dog was the target of a coyote attack right outside their home. Nathaniel Palmer recounted the ordeal, when his Comfort Retriever, Tatum, was ambushed by a coyote that followed the pet to the front door. "Rather than barking I heard this horrific yelping," Palmer said. He recounted to NBC Boston, "I flew out the door and saw Tatum and a coyote at least his size."

The confrontation occurred last Saturday night when Tatum usually has his nightly romp around the property. According to Palmer's statement obtained by NBC Boston, the coyote managed to surprisingly pin down Tatum, who was promptly rescued by Palmer's intervention. He was left shaken but physically unharmed. This episode was a jarring reminder that even in a seemingly safe environment, the proximity of wildlife can lead to unforeseen encounters.

Following this incident, Palmer has taken to public advocacy, warning other pet owners to remain vigilant, especially with the coyote mating season looming, a time when these animals are known to be more active and bold. Speaking to WHDH, Palmer urged, "Every dog has to be on leash at night. Every dog has to be accompanied."

Palmer reflected on the changing wildlife dynamics in the area, noting a shift from "a lot of foxes and other smaller animals" to now, a growing number of coyotes. The distressed owner was openly critical of his own misjudgments leading up to the attack. "I feel I was being really naïve" he confessed in the WHDH interview. The incident has served as a catalyst for broader awareness regarding the presence of predatory wildlife in suburban settings and the critical need for preventive measures to protect domestic animals. With the reported increase in coyote sightings in their neighborhood, the Palmers and their neighbors are now on high alert.
