The month of December has seen a spike in vehicle burglaries in the community, with a total of 12 reported cases. The department revealed that four of these incidents involved a broken window, while six cases were the result of vehicles being left unlocked, according to the Coppell Police Department.
Of the four break-ins involving busted windows, one unfortunate victim was targeted after withdrawing money from a bank, an act known as jugging. The police report detailed that two of those cases had items easily spotted from the outside. The department's data suggests that burglars are likely to simply have valuables that appear to call out to them through the glass.
In an alarming turn, two of the thefts from unlocked vehicles involved stolen firearms, raising concerns about public safety and the potential for these weapons to quickly find their way onto the streets. The remaining incidents included one where the criminals seemed to try to steal the entire vehicle, as evidenced by the marks of a forced entry, but had abandoned their endeavor.
With burglaries marauding through the peace of the neighborhood, the Coppell PD urges residents to adopt a cautious approach to safeguard their belongings. Their mantra: "LOCK, TAKE, HIDE," is a straightforward appeal to residents to lock their cars, take their keys, and hide their belongings, thereby making it significantly harder for criminals to walk away with their possessions, as per the Coppell Police Department.
