A frantic chase followed by a police shooting unfolded in Grapevine, Texas, ending on a golf course, after officers responded to reports of a car burglary Tuesday night. Identified as 23-year-old Keyvionte Henderson of Dallas, the suspect is now facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault against a public servant, according to WFAA.
Grapevine police were dispatched to the Jefferson Silverlake Apartments after Henderson was reportedly seen attempting to break into vehicles. During the confrontation, Henderson is said to have crashed not only into a civilian car but also into a marked patrol car, before driving to directly engage two officers, which prompted one officer to discharge their weapon to stop the threat, according to FOX 4 News.
Henderson reportedly then crashed into a transformer, igniting a fire that shot flames up to 20 feet into the air, as recounted by an apartment complex resident. Following the crash, the suspect fled on foot, initiating a foot chase culminating at the Cowboys Golf Course, where police apprehended him.
"It was freezing cold, and they were running, and the officers had no idea this wooded area where the suspect was," Amanda McNew with the Grapevine Police Department said, highlighting the challenging conditions during the pursuit. The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as per FOX 4 News.
After receiving treatment for minor injuries, Henderson was transported to jail, facing an array of charges including evading arrest/detention with a vehicle and an accident involving damage to a vehicle. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending an investigation. Henderson's history of criminal activity in Dallas County includes pleading guilty to burglary of a vehicle and felony theft, adding to the complexity of the case.
