As another burst of winter chills grips North Texas, Dallas has geared up to shield its homeless population from the biting cold with a temporary shelter at Fair Park, according to CBS News Texas.
The shelter, backed by the city of Dallas in collaboration with local agencies including OurCalling and the Austin Street Shelter, is providing sanctuary to those in need amid dangerously low temperatures, with expectations to accommodate about 750 individuals Saturday night, all while the Austin Street Shelter is preparing to take in an additional 250 persons weather forecast to be 36 degrees in wet weather and 32 degrees in dry weather for at least three hours volunteers from the surrounding Downtown areas are busy guiding the homeless out of the icy streets.
In a concerted effort described by OurCalling CEO Pastor Wayne Walker as a "beautiful picture of all these agencies coming together," the shelters, which nearly reached full capacity the previous Sunday, have been operational since last week, as reported by CBS News Texas.
Amidst the subzero hustle, volunteers like Joshua Harper play a pivotal role at the Fair Park shelter, Harper, who has volunteered with OurCalling for over a year now, says his greatest inspiration comes from seeing guests transition from homelessness to having a home, his altruism echoing the ethos of "being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ," as he engages with guests over meals and games of chess, proudly sustaining community rapport.
The city's directive resonates through the diligent work of those like Harper, ensuring not only shelter but also essential amenities including meals and warm clothing for guests facing the harsh elements, as highlighted by FOX 4 News, which noted the shelter's capacity to house around 1,000 people, single adults with pets included, and the arrangement of alternative accommodations for families.
Dallas officials, recognizing the acute necessity, have geared the community effort towards the donation of essential items, with Deputy City Manager Kimberly Tolbert emphasizing the goal to equip guests with "essential items to keep them warm" upon leaving the shelter.
