A daring rescue unfolded yesterday morning as crews rushed to the Cajon Pass area, where an off-roader in a Jeep was trapped under his vehicle after a rollover. The accident occurred on Forest Service Road 2N47, east of Interstate 15, a challenging trail favored by off-roading enthusiasts. According to a Facebook post by the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the call came through to 911 that an individual was pinned beneath his Jeep, prompting an immediate response.
Due to the area's inaccessibility, San Bernardino County Sheriff's air resources were vital, providing air support as firefighters approached in specialized all-terrain rescue vehicles and conventional fire apparatus. The terrain's ruggedness, a testament to the off-roading community's quest for adventure, proved a formidable challenge during the rescue operation, complicating efforts with steep inclines, leaking fuel, and unstable ground. In a statement obtained by the San Bernardino County Fire Department, Mike McClintock, the Battalion Chief, detailed the simultaneous execution of advanced life-saving techniques alongside complex rescue tactics.
The trapped man, an adult male, was eventually liberated from his overturned vehicle by the persistent efforts of the firefighters. He was hoisted to safety by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Air Rescue and whisked away to an area trauma center. The multi-hour rescue effort demonstrated coordination between the various emergency services, including fire department crews who were dispatched with an engine, and a Medic Ambulance. Additional resources such as an Urban Search and Rescue team two Terrain Rescue Vehicles and U.S. Forest Service also played a crucial role in the operation, assisting throughout the endeavor.
The incident, which took place on January 13th at 10:44 a.m., served as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers that come with the thrill of off-roading.
