In a bid to tackle persistent rat infestations, the City of Dearborn has opted to go beneath the streets, introducing a new subterranean baiting strategy in conjunction with pest control giant Orkin. With the colder months driving rodents to seek shelter underground, officials aim to reduce the pest population by administering rodent bait throughout the sanitary sewer system."Historically, Dearborn has faced challenges in mitigating rat infestations across the city during colder months when rodents seek refuge underground to escape the weather," Mayor Abdullah Hammoud stated, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
The approach expects to swiftly address the infestation issue by placing the bait on steel cables, which are then lowered into 460 manholes citywide. Yet, this aggressive push to eradicate the vermin has not been met without skepticism and worry. Concerns arise about possible unintended environmental impacts from the use of rodenticides. Local resident Craig Gorkiewicz expressed his unease, telling WXYZ that "Residents also don't want to be using poison that's harming other animals." Gorkiewicz outlined alternative methods that he finds preferable, such as confinement traps and the BurrowRX system, which employs carbon monoxide to suffocate rats in their underground lairs.
Despite these reservations, the City of Dearborn maintains that the baits, placed strategically above the waterline, do not pose a risk to the environment, non-target wildlife, pets, or people when used correctly. "Only 0.005% per 1 oz of bait is actually ‘poison’," the Dearborn Vector Control team assured, noting that the rodenticides used are second generation, requiring a single dose to be effective and are designed to break down into non-toxic components within 30 days. The city's partnership with Orkin is also set to bring about significant data collection, offering a heatmap of infestation, data analysis, and more, per the contracting firm's report to the city.
Rat infestations are a serious nuisance in Metro Detroit, with Detroit city ranking ninth on Orkin’s "rattiest cities" list in the previous year. The introduction of the subterranean baiting program in Dearborn aims to also prevent such infestations by deterring new populations of rodents from colonizing these below-ground sanctuaries. To combat infestation at the source suggests a proactivity that could set a precedent for municipalities similarly besieged by rodents. Professional pest control advice includes keeping spaces in and around homes clear of clutter and potential nesting materials, storing food in sealed containers, and vigilant monitoring for signs of rodent presence, such as droppings, gnaw marks, and unusual noises, with strategies detailed by the ClickOnDetroit report.
Residents faced with rodent problems are encouraged to contact the City of Dearborn for property inspections by the Vector Control team, an effort that is part of a wider push to ensure that the city remains livable and to staunchly turn the tide in the war against the unwanted underground dwellers.
