A Georgian sheepdog by the name of Casper has truly set the standard for canine heroism, having been awarded the People's Choice Pup after fearlessly guarding his flock against a pack of predatory coyotes. The Great Pyrenees, who calls a Decatur sheep farm his home, earned the venerable title after over 100,000 people cast their votes in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2024 Farm Dog of the Year contest, reported FOX 5 Atlanta.
Casper didn't just stand idly by to watch, the brave dog was compelled to engage aggressively, sustaining serious injuries in a relentless fight around the property's creek that lasted for thirty minutes. The dog's disappearance following the skirmish left the farm owner, John Wierwiller, reaching out through social media for assistance in locating the wounded guardian. "I wasn't afraid they were going to attack me or anything, but they were focused on Casper," Wierwiller recounted during an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta.
Two days post the ordeal, Casper resurfaced, badly injured, leading to a successful GoFundMe campaign organized by LifeLine Animal Project. The initiative raised more than $15,000 – exceeding the hospital bill's cost, with the surplus allocated to future animal rescues. Additionally, as part of the People's Choice Pup Award, Casper is to receive a plaque, a basket of Purina products, and the Farm Bureau has pledged a $1,000 donation to LifeLine Animal Project.
Before clinching the People's Choice Pup Award, Casper was nominated for Farm Dog of the Year for his extraordinary act of bravery where he fought and killed eight coyotes. A victory in the Farm Dog of the Year competition would mean to exceptionally reward Casper with a year's supply of Purina dog food and a cash prize of $5,000, as featured in a report by The Guardian. “There are a lot of deserving dogs. It’s an honor for him just to be nominated,” Wierwiller told Atlanta News First, acknowledging the stiff competition faced by his loyal sheepdog.
The community has rallied around the courageous Casper, with Wierwiller expressing gratitude on social media: “Thank you also to everyone who voted for our brave, determined, and goofy livestock protector,” he wrote, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported. The resilient Casper, now a local celebrity, has a long life of pastoral duty ahead of him, to the delight of his owner and the online community that supported his recovery.
