DeKalb County police and a weary family have reason to celebrate after 77-year-old Jim "Jimmy" Flowers, who suffers from Alzheimer's and Dementia, was found safe in Decatur Saturday evening. Flowers had gone missing earlier that morning, sparking an urgent search after leaving his home on foot around 5:45 a.m., as reported by Atlanta News First.
While the alarm was raised after Flowers departed from his residence at 612 Ladson Court, he was notably sporting dark blue plaid pajama pants and a white shirt. Adding to the unease was his fragile mental state worsened by dementia, with DeKalb County police being explicit about his condition and urging the public to be vigilant. "He may also have a black Kangol or black Alpha Phi Alpha hat," police shared with the community in efforts to aid his identification. The man's height is recorded at an imposing 6 feet, 1 inch, and a weight of approximately 205 pounds.
Fortune smiled when Flowers, who happened to wear a distinctive golden yellow short-sleeve top with a collar and a black wool Kangol hat, was unwittingly captured by a Ring doorbell camera near Pinetree Drive and Scott Boulevard.
Temperatures had dipped to concerning lows of between 35- and 40-degrees, which doubtless left Flowers, possibly clinging to a pair of black gloves, in a precarious state, the family told FOX 5. In light of his safe return, they did not hold back their heartfelt appreciation, expressing profound gratitude for the community's earnest efforts to locate their beloved patriarch.
Police had urged anyone with information on Flower's whereabouts to come forward and contact them at 770-724-7710 or dial 911.
