Two separate dog theft ordeals in DeKalb County ended on a positive note with the owners being reunited with their furry friends, underscoring the unique bonds between humans and their pets while highlighting a worrying trend in pet theft. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a woman in northern Georgia reconnected with her dog, Kano, at a DeKalb County animal shelter after the dog grew up with her family in the Blue Ridge mountains. The woman's son had to leave Kano behind when he joined the Army, leading her to rehome the dog due to life and family commitments. Months later, something compelled her to search online for Kano, leading to their touching reunion. "I knew in my soul he needed me; it's like he was calling me somehow," the woman said in the heartwarming moments captured at the LifeLine Animal Project.

On another note, Chayce Gunderson was reunited with her Spaniel, Millie, nearly three weeks after a thief broke into her home and took the dog as she slept. The incident, "It was either her mom or sister who recognized Millie from the news," Gunderson told WSB-TV. Lifeline Animal Project staff played a crucial role in facilitating the reunion after Millie was brought into the DeKalb County Animal Shelter, and an employee remembered Gunderson's search for her Spaniel.

The American Kennel Club tracks incidents of pet theft and has noted a slight decrease in such cases. Certain breeds, like French Bulldogs, remain a hot target for thieves.

Gunderson, relieved to have Millie back, has taken measures to prevent future incidents. "We did put cameras in, and we have door alarms. So, we're definitely more protected," she said, as reported by WSB-TV.
