After more than three decades of dedicated service, Deputy Chief Jeff Giles of the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) has retired. His tenure, which began just as the Mall of America opened its doors in 1992, has been marked by a steadfast commitment to law enforcement and the community he vowed to protect.

In an illustrious career that spanned over 31 years, Giles made his mark in various capacities – from handling a K9 named Duke to leading SWAT teams into the fray. According to a statement released by the BPD, he also put on the hats of a field training officer, bike patrol officer, and investigator. The commendable journey saw Giles rise through the ranks, earning a sergeant's stripes in 2004 and later supervising the Special Investigations Unit.

While tackling narcotics and human trafficking cases in his stride, Giles’ influence went beyond operational success – it extended into the heart of the BPD as a mentor cherished by his colleagues. His promotion to deputy chief in July 2020 was a testament to his leadership and dedication.

Giles himself acknowledged the collective spirit of the department. "It has been my honor and privilege to serve as a police officer for the City of Bloomington for over 31 years," Giles said. "I am incredibly proud of the entire staff at the Bloomington Police Department as I know they are dedicated to the continued excellence in policing that is the standard of BPD."
