This was before the Lions secured their spot in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, an achievement that seemed a distant dream the last time they contended for a national championship in 1957. According to The Detroit News, Chepeska, from Rochester Hills, got the tattoo in August, feeling it was "destiny."
Chepeska's belief in the team seems to have only grown with each win, firmly stating, "Now when we win, I assume I'll have a statue right next to the Barry Sanders one out there," Chepeska said, per CBS News Detroit. Despite some early fears of having possibly jinxed the team, his confidence in the Lions has been steadfast, boosted by the Lions beating former quarterback Matthew Stafford in their playoff run. "It almost felt like destiny to beat him back here where he’d spent so many years of him not being able to do this, and we got to get it back. It was an emotional win," Chepeska shared with WXYZ.
While the tattoo might stand out as an act of extreme fandom, local tattoo artists are seeing an uptick in Lions-themed work. "We're probably gonna drop a whole bunch of Lions flash," Steven Rodger Lemirand from B'z Ink Tattoo and Piercing Shop in Troy explained. Lisa Hurt from Elite Ink in Warren is also "eager to do a Lions tattoo" and remarked about the public's changing sentiment, "The Detroit Lions after having been joked about… for so long, to have something to celebrate about, I’m on board with people wanting Lions tattoos", per The Detroit News.
Chepeska, meanwhile, remains unshakeable in his resolution, not entertaining thoughts of regret or the potential need to modify the artwork. In the event of a loss, his backup plan is to simply cross off 2024 and put 2025, and then jokingly say "maybe in 15 years, I'll have a full-sleeve." Though some may view his gesture as extreme, Chepeska considers it a symbolic commitment to his team. "It feels like destiny, it's our turn," he confidently proclaimed to CBS News Detroit. It's this level of fan fervor that adds to the high-stakes drama as the Lions prepare to potentially silence critics or confirm the suspicions of skeptics in the upcoming Super Bowl bid.
