Man Stabbed Multiple Times Outside Detroit's Mike's Fresh Market, Suspect on the Run

A man was stabbed multiple times following an argument near Mike's Fresh Market on Detroit's east side yesterday, and police are still searching for the suspect who fled the scene. The attack happened around 11:50 a.m. at Gratiot Avenue and Lappin Street, according to police, leaving the victim in temporary serious condition.

Police say two people got into an argument before one person stabbed the other multiple times, according to WXYZ Channel 7, which first reported the attack. Officers have not released additional details about the suspect, the station notes, and no arrest had been announced as of yesterday afternoon.

Officers Swept the Area for a Man Known as “Mike”

Emergency dispatch chatter picked up by a local scanner account indicated that responding officers were searching for a white male in his mid-30s with brown hair, identified only by the name “Mike,” in connection with the stabbing, according to The Detroit Scanner. That description has not been confirmed through an official police statement, and it remains unclear whether it refers to the suspect or is simply a coincidental echo of the supermarket's name.

The stabbing happened within blocks of a location with a long history of community significance. The Mike's Fresh Market building at 14383 Gratiot Avenue previously operated as the last Detroit-based Kroger store until 2005, when it was sold to become an independent grocer to help preserve food access on the city's east side, per BridgeDetroit.

A Corridor Already Under Close Watch

The store enrolled in Detroit's Project Green Light program in April 2016, giving Detroit police a direct, high-definition video feed from the property into the department's Real-Time Crime Center, according to the City of Detroit Board of Police Commissioners. It's unclear whether that footage, or any street-level Green Light cameras nearby, captured the argument that led to Friday's stabbing.

The location has also served as a gathering point for anti-violence efforts. In September 2023, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan chose Mike's Fresh Market as the starting point for a community peace march under the One Detroit Violence Reduction Partnership, an initiative targeting the 8th and 9th Precincts.

The stabbing falls within the jurisdiction of DPD's 9th Precinct, whose headquarters sits less than two miles down Gratiot Avenue at 11187 Gratiot Avenue, according to the City of Detroit. The same stretch of Gratiot has seen other violence in recent months — a June shooting in the 11900 block left one man dead and another wounded, as Hoodline reported in its coverage of that fatal shooting.

The intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Lappin Street has drawn attention before, too. In August 2025, two Detroit police officers were hospitalized after a red-light runner broadsided their patrol cruiser there, an incident Hoodline covered in its report on the officers hurt in that crash.

Citywide Violence Has Been Falling, But Cases Persist

Yesterday's stabbing comes as Detroit continues to see historic drops in violent crime. The city recorded 165 homicides and 447 nonfatal shootings in 2025, a 19% reduction in homicides and a 26% decrease in nonfatal shootings compared to 2024, according to the City of Detroit — the lowest homicide total in the city since 1965.

Detroit's clearance rate for nonfatal shooting cases has also climbed above 70% in 2024 and 2025, following the decision to embed assistant county prosecutors directly into DPD precinct stations, per city data. Similar stabbing cases elsewhere in the region have led to serious felony charges; under Michigan law, stabbing someone during an argument can bring charges of felonious assault with a dangerous weapon, which carries up to four years in prison, or assault with intent to do great bodily harm, which carries up to 10 years, according to D.C. Law PLLC. Whether either charge applies here will depend on what investigators determine once a suspect is identified.

For now, the man stabbed yesterday remains in temporary serious condition, and police have not said whether they have identified a suspect beyond the initial field description broadcast over dispatch radio. Anyone with information has not yet been given a specific tip line by police, according to available reporting.
