In the early hours of Saturday morning, tragedy struck on a Detroit freeway when a 41-year-old man was killed after being hit on an I-96 freeway ramp. Following a single-vehicle accident, the Detroit resident exited his car only to be struck by another vehicle, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Michigan State Police responded to the initial crash on the I-96 exit ramp to Outer Drive at around 12:35 a.m. While searching for the crash scene, they discovered the man lying on the ramp. The man was subsequently rushed to a local hospital, where, he was pronounced dead, according to ClickOnDetroit.
After the initial crash, the man, who had been a passenger in the vehicle, began walking up the Outer Drive ramp. It was at this point that he was struck by another car. The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin, according to Audacy.
The driver involved in the secondary accident stopped after hitting the passenger, as noted by authorities. In the aftermath of the incident, Michigan State Police F/Lt Mike Shaw issued a statement reiterating road safety advice, "We want to remind everyone to stay in your vehicle if involved in a crash or a breakdown on the freeway," Shaw said. "If you can't move off the freeway, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened and call 911. This is your safest option", as per ClickOnDetroit.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with MSP waiting on medical examiner reports and blood analysis results. This incident serves as a harrowing reminder of the dangers that can present themselves in the most unexpected of moments on the road.
