The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council kicked off its 2024 meetings with a flourish, recognizing standout members and community leaders who are making their mark. At City Hall on January 16, the meeting spotlighted Jr. Commissioner Dickson Petitfere, Jr. honoring him as the Outstanding Jr. Commissioner, and lauded Wyatt Montgomery as this month's Outstanding Community Leader, as per an announcement on the city's official website.

With brains and brawn, Dickson Petitfere, Jr., a sophomore at Coffee High School, boasts an impressive 95A+ average and prowess on the football field. According to the city's news release, Petitfere who is actively involved with Ambitious Young Men and the Youth Council, has his sights set on an engineering or technology career. In the world of sports and mentoring, Wyatt Montgomery, owner of Force Jiu-Jitsu shines. A former collegiate wrestler and an ISSA Elite Trainer, his dedication extends beyond the mat, guiding youth to lay the groundwork for achieving their life's ambitions.

Adding a touch of philanthropy to the meeting, Allison Woodward from the Coffee County Food Bank shared insights into tackling hunger in the community. The Food Bank's mission revolves around not only distributing food to those in hunger's clutch but also offering additional support resources. In an inspirational nod to the collective effort, the food bank, with the help of volunteers, supports over 800 children facing food insecurity each weekend, ensuring those in need do not go without.

Looking ahead, the next Mayor’s Youth Council assembly is slated for February 20, welcoming the public in the Commission Chambers of City Hall. Meanwhile, the call for volunteers for the 2024-2025 term is open until January 31, extending opportunities for engagement in the Youth Council and the Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court.
