Residents and businesses in downtown Fort Worth experienced moments of unease Friday afternoon as police and fire departments, alongside Atmos Energy, responded to a gas leak near the site of a recent hotel explosion. According to FOX 4 News, the incident occurred at the intersection of 7th and Commerce Streets, which is situated close to the Sandman Signature Hotel, the scene of an explosion on January 8 that injured 21 individuals.
Craig Trojacek, the public information officer for the Fort Worth Fire Department, told FOX 4 News, "Right after 12:30 p.m., we got dispatched out here to a vapor gas leak.” Despite the alarm, the rupture was part of planned work on a gas main, not connected to the explosion's cause. Some businesses chose to evacuate, underscoring the tension still palpable in downtown Fort Worth.
A gas main under repair by construction crews was identified as the source of the leak. The necessary shutdown of the gas commenced swiftly, with fire officials monitoring air quality and reporting no issues inside nearby businesses, as noted in a statement obtained by NBC DFW.
Despite the proximity to the catastrophic event from the past week, Trojacek reassured, "This was a pre-planned replacement of pipe by Atmos that was completely separate from anything that took place last week." Nonetheless, with a hotel explosion’s cause still under investigation and the memory fresh, the collective sigh of relief once the leak was contained could be felt through the city’s core. Details on the ongoing investigation into the Sandman Signature Hotel incident highlight that natural gas, though not yet officially confirmed as the cause, is a suspected element in the tragedy.
Local institutions such as The Young Women's Leadership Academy were not in the evacuation zone and maintained normal operations. The city's response echoed previous assertions that there was no immediate threat resulting from the leak. Atmos Energy indicated that their system did not play a part in the prior explosion, reinforcing a narrative of coincidence rather than causation in Friday's gas main rupture. In the aftermath of these events, Fort Worth's first responders and Atmos Energy continue to emphasize safety and urge residents to maintain vigilance regarding natural gas leaks.
