
The City of Duncanville is hosting a special fireside chat with Ms. Opal Lee, affectionately known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, on February 8 as part of its Black History Month celebrations, providing a rare opportunity for residents to engage with a pivotal figure in the recognition of a key moment in American history, according to the City of Duncanville.
Ms. Lee has been at the forefront of the effort to bring national attention to Juneteenth, which marks the abolition of slavery in the United States. Her work is a reflection of her commitment to education and promoting unity. She has gained widespread respect across the country for her advocacy and educational efforts.
Tickets for the event, which are free of charge, are being distributed up until February 7 at the Duncanville Recreation Center, located just a stone’s throw from the senior center at 201 James Collins Blvd., with distribution hours stretching from the break of dawn at 6:00 AM till the evening at 8:30 PM.
The fireside chat is slated for midday, running from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and offers an intimate venue for attendees at the senior center located at 206 James Collins Blvd., Duncanville, TX, but to be one of the lucky participants in this distinguished event, the community is encouraged to pick up their tickets well in advance as anticipation for Ms. Lee's appearance and insights is expected to be high, drawing crowds keen to listen and learn from her storied experiences.
