As instances of identity theft continue to plague Americans, the Federal Trade Commission has taken action by proclaiming Jan. 29–Feb. 2, as Identity Theft Awareness Week. This nationwide initiative aims to educate the public on safeguarding their personal information. Last year alone, Eden Prairie reported 135 cases of identity theft, highlighting the persistent threat facing communities.
To further arm citizens against potential fraud, the Eden Prairie Police Department (EPPD) has released a series of preventative measures. These include avoiding responding to unknown calls or messages, ensuring your mail is securely collected, and staying vigilant about bank and credit card statements, as posted on their official blog edenprairie.org/EPPDBlog.
The EPPD advises the public to exercise caution with public Wi-Fi networks and to create strong, unique passwords. Additionally, they warn against "phishing" scams, a tactic where thieves disguise themselves as legitimate entities to extract personal information. "Beware of 'phishing' scams. Scam artists 'phish' for victims by pretending to be banks, stores, or government agencies," the EPPD blog stated.
Whether it's at the park or in a fitness center, the EPPD suggests never leaving personal items such as purses or wallets in unattended vehicles; these locations are hotspots for identity thieves. During Identity Theft Awareness Week, the FTC is offering numerous free online educational events to empower individuals with the knowledge to protect themselves against identity theft.
