In a notable stride towards enhancing emergency response services, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office celebrated the commencement of its inaugural Telecommunicator Academy. Three dispatchers, representing the sheriff's office and the Corsicana Police Department, not only completed the rigorous course but also aced their state exams in one fell swoop, a testament to the quality of the program.

Sheriff Brad Norman had the honor of distributing certificates at the graduation ceremony, marking a significant advancement in local emergency services training; this academy brings essential education closer to home, and Ellis County can boast the building of a robust foundation for crisis management, these dispatchers are the first product of such a dedicated regional effort. Before this initiative, Ellis County's dispatchers faced the grueling task of traveling into the Metroplex for nearly three weeks for mandatory training, said Amy Zapata, one of the highly trained dispatchers at the forefront of this change alongside her manager Carla Rolland, they recognized the strain on their colleagues and knew there had to be a better way.

The academy's establishment was made possible after Captain D. Gardner, M.D., alongside Zapata and Rolland, successfully lobbied the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for a license allowing the Sheriff's Office to conduct its own Basic Telecommunicator Academy. With this license, not only is Ellis County benefiting but also surrounding agencies can tap into the local resource, ensuring qualified professionals are just a call away for anyone dialing 911.

Acknowledgments were especially extended to Mrs. Zapata for her dedication to training dispatchers and peace officers; her work goes beyond Ellis County as she trains personnel statewide annually at various police academies, her efforts serve as a backbone for the public safety infrastructure, ensuring individuals in the worst of times have a skilled voice to guide them through crisis. This accomplishment underscores their commitment to "serve our county and those agencies surrounding us, by bringing this academy class to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office", according to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.
