As the Texas State braces for potentially record-breaking cold, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is sounding the alarm. ERCOT, which manages the power grid for the vast majority of Texas, issued an Operational Condition Notice (OCN) forecasting extreme weather conditions from Monday, January 15, to Wednesday, January 17, reported by KVUE.

The OCN is a preemptive call to action, reminding Texans to prepare for a polar blast that according to the National Weather Service, could be the season's strongest. In a tweet, the agency projected that the cold front will hit Sunday night, with San Antonio and Austin areas likely to see highs remaining below the freezing threshold on Monday, and overnight lows plunging below 25 degrees on Tuesday, per My San Antonio.

In their warning, ERCOT noted that the grid is expected to maintain normal conditions and they anticipate sufficient supply to meet the upcoming demand. This news comes amid memories of the February 2021 deep freeze that crippled the state, leaving millions without power or heat and leading to widespread burst pipes and boil water advisories.

In response to the past grid failures, ERCOT, lawmakers, and power regulators have implemented changes to the grid's operation. These include mandated weatherization for key components of the energy infrastructure, and ERCOT says that their "inspection program is ahead of pace to what is required from a compliance perspective," as stated by ERCOT president and CEO Pablo Vegas at their board of directors meeting on Dec. 19, 2023, according to KVUE.
