An Alabama jailbird's flight to freedom was clipped after he was found hiding in an Atlanta recycling bin, police reported. Tyree Chapman, a 22-year-old escapee from Bessemer City Jail in Alabama, led police on a wild chase in a stolen Infiniti Q50 before trying to disappear inside neighborhood trash, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The pursuit began on Jan. 17 when Atlanta officers, responding to a sighting of the stolen vehicle on the 300 block of Boulevard NE, attempted to stop the car, which Chapman allegedly accelerated, fleeing and leading the officers on a high-speed chase, police said. After ditching the car at a convenience store on Glenn Street, Chapman tried to evade capture on foot but an eagle-eyed Aviation Unit watched from above as Chapman, eventually, sought refuge in a blue recycling bin; the police then apprehended him, and inside the bin, they also discovered a hidden handgun, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Chapman now faces a multitude of charges in Atlanta including driving with a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, firearm possession during a felony, and theft by receiving stolen property. He was transported to Fulton County Jail for processing, with plans to extradite him back to Alabama, according to information from WSB-TV Atlanta.
"Chapman ran into a nearby neighborhood where he tried to hide inside a garbage can," police said, as the pursuit continued to unfold through quiet residential streets, with officers ultimately finding Chapman in the garbage can and they also recovered a gun that he allegedly attempted to ditch inside another trash receptacle, as WSB-TV Atlanta detailed. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Chapman is additionally charged with escape in the second degree and theft, charges levied by the Bessemer Police Department on Jan. 18.
