
A cold-blooded killer donning a grisly skull mask is on the loose after gunning down a 48-year-old man in a Fredericksburg convenience store late Tuesday during a brazen robbery, Fredericksburg police reported.
The fatal shooting unfolded near midnight at the Kwikcheck Convenience Store on South State Highway 16, when the suspect, clad in a dark hoodie or jacket, ball cap, blue jeans, and carrying a duffel bag slipped into the store, changed into the skull mask in the backroom and mercilessly shot the victim, Arthur Cortez, a Fredericksburg resident the clerks involvement went unscathed as the perpetrator turned the gun on him, demanding cash before fleeing on foot.
Authorities arrived at the harrowing scene to find Cortez stricken with a fatal gunshot wound; first responders attempted life-saving measures to no avail, as Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KENS 5.
Police have reviewed surveillance footage showing the escalation of the robbery and the suspect's transformation with his haunting disguise, the footage has failed in unveiling his identity, police have classified the suspect as armed and dangerous and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to his capture, anyone with knowledge of the crime should come forward and speak to the detectives of Fredericksburg Police Department at 830-997-7585, as was urged in a statement obtained by KSAT.
