A Fillmore man, once trusted to guide youth in a spiritual setting, is starting a two-year stint behind bars for committing a lewd act on a child, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced. Vidal Vargas Morales, who is also mandated to register as a sex offender, was sentenced on January 23 after being found guilty last month of the felony charge, which revolves around an incident from 2013 involving a 15-year-old catechism student. official statement released detailed Morales' conviction and sentencing.
According to details from the case, Morales, who was born on December 30, 1960, abused his role as a youth coordinator for a Fillmore church, he began having inappropriate conversations with the victim over text messages and then escalated to physical abuse during the latter months of 2013, although the victim did not report the crime until years after the traumatic event took place during his time at the church other victims came forward during the trial with similar allegations, painting a pattern of predatory behavior. Deputy District Attorney Michael Kern, who is a member of the Sexual Assault Unit and led the prosecution, stated, "The defendant used his position of trust and authority as a respected member of the church and Fillmore community to inflict emotional, spiritual, and ultimately, sexual abuse against the victim," according to the District Attorney's Office.
The court found it aggravating that Morales exploited his authoritative role to victimize the minor, which legally exacerbated his misconduct. Morales, whose case is officially noted as 2016023855, was convicted of a lewd act upon a child under California Penal Code section 288(c)(1), and faced an additional finding under CRC 4.421(a)(11) for breaching a position of trust. The gravity of these charges and allegations warranted a firm response from the justice system, ensuring the resulting sentence duly reflected the egregious nature of Morales' actions.
While Morales' punishment may provide a degree of solace to the survivors, the legal aftershocks persist as he is due to reappear in court for a restitution hearing, which is slated for January 31, 2024, where further financial penalties may be imposed to compensate the victim for the incurred damages, the hearing is set for 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 14 of the Ventura County Superior Court, and until then the full extent of Morales' restitution remains yet to be resolved. Deputy District Attorney Kern expressed hopes that "while this sentence can never fully remedy the harm suffered by the victim in this case, hopefully it serves as one step in this continued healing process," suggesting an acknowledgment of the long-lasting impact of such crimes, as detailed by the District Attorney's Office.
