A blaze that erupted in a vacant Mountain View commercial building, once home to the Off Ramp Bicycle shop, was quelled by the swift response of local firefighters this past Sunday night. According to the City of Mountain View's official statement, the empty property at 2320 W El Camino Real became the scene of an emergency after reports of smoke and a burning odor were made to 9-1-1 at around 9:40 p.m.
Upon their immediate dispatch, the City of Mountain View Fire Department units arrived by 9:45 p.m. to discover individuals on the building's roof amidst billowing smoke from the second floor. Firefighters managed to quickly set up ladders and attempt to evacuate those present, who, before providing any insight on the situation, self-evacuated and then fled the scene. The true challenge came when fire crews entered, stumbled upon the fire itself—localized in the kitchen area—and decisively extinguished it.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, though Mountain View Police had to shut down neighboring roads, affecting traffic along Ortega Avenue and W El Camino Real. After dousing the flames, firefighters upheld public safety using thermal imaging tech to confirm that the fire had been thoroughly subdued.
The financial toll of the fire is minor, estimated to be around $1,500, but the investigation shed light on its origins. The conflagration was determined to have been sparked by an unattended warming fire, presumably set intentionally.
