Former Austin City Council Member Kathie Tovo has thrown her hat into the ring, announcing her candidacy to become the city's next mayor, per a release obtained by KXAN. Tovo, who served on the council from 2011 to 2023, is voicing her dedication to a platform built on "equity, honest government and standing up for women, workers, immigrants, and our LGBTQIA+ community." Her staunch opposition to the I-35 expansion and her defense against the State's perceived encroachments on local freedoms could set the tone for a spirited campaign.
Highlighting her track record Tovo, according to her campaign website as reported by Spectrum Local News, stands firm in her conviction to represent those "who can't afford high-paid lobbyists to advance their interests." Tovo is not only charting a course for a city where the rights of every individual to succeed are paramount but also a place where the workers and families, who are the city's lifeblood, can remain and flourish.
Drawing from her time on the council, Tovo points to significant achievements such as investing in childcare centers, championing affordable housing policies, coordinating the distribution of over one million healthy free meals to students, and devising emergency shelter strategies for extreme weather events, as evidence of her unwavering commitment to the community. Simultaneously, she continues her work as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas, bridging academic insights with civic engagement.
Interestingly, the incumbent mayor Kirk Watson has yet to formally announce his intention to seek re-election. Watson, who clinched victory in the 2022 mayoral election by the slimmest margin in over two decades, is in his second tenure as mayor after previous terms from 1997-2001, and a long stint in the Texas Senate from 2007-2020. Following the passing of a 2021 ballot measure, the mayoral election is now aligned with the presidential cycle, truncating Watson's current term to two years.
