The quaint island of Martha's Vineyard, known for its summer getaways and celebrity visitors, is now in the headlines for a scandal involving a former fire chief. John Rose, once a community leader entrusted with public safety, has been embroiled in allegations that he secretly recorded a sex tape without the consent of the other person involved. The Cape and Islands District Attorney's office confirmed that Rose, 53, faces serious charges of illegal surveillance.
According to an investigation initiated last month by Massachusetts State Police, and as reported by NBC Boston, it came to light that Rose allegedly had a video showing a sexual act being performed on him, a recording made without knowledge or permission from the person in it. Prior to these allegations, Rose's record was tainted with controversy, including an FBI inquiry into questionable conduct and financial mismanagement during his tenure as fire chief in Oak Bluffs, leading to his resignation in 2020.
PEGGED as "not suitable for bail" by authorities, Rose awaits his moment in court, as he is now being held without the chance to post bail. The charges brought before him will be formally addressed at the Edgartown District Court arraignment scheduled on Monday, January 22, as per details provided by the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office to Boston 25 News.
To compound Rose's legal woes, his reputation was previously mired by an investigation in 2014 conducted by the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission. They delved into accusations that Rose, while acting as the department's ambulance squad chief, placed himself in a conflict of interest by hiring and overseeing four of his family members. Although resolved by a "public education letter" rather than a formal proceeding, this incident was just an early indication of the pattern of questionable ethics now culminating in his current accusation of violating the intimate privacy of another.
Alluded to by the Vineyard Gazette, his connection with the professional community of fire services was further severed last month when the West Tisbury Fire Department placed him on suspension. This followed the granting of a harassment prevention order against him. The DA's office has declined further commentary on the ongoing investigation, assuring the public that justice shall be pursued diligently in this troubling case.
