In a case that has dredged up events from the past shrouded in mystery, Teresa Ann Black stands trial for the alleged murder of her young son, known for years only as "John Clifton Doe". More than two decades have passed since the body of six-year-old William Dashawn Hamilton was found near a DeKalb County cemetery. Jury selection began today, launching a trial that promises to unfold chapters of a long and dark narrative, as per Hoodline.
According to Hoodline, Black, 46, faces charges including felony murder and cruelty to children. In 1999, a cemetery worker had stumbled upon the remains of the young boy in a field, unwittingly opening a gateway to years of investigation that would eventually lead to Black's indictment. Arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, Black was extradited back to Georgia where, she has been in custody at the DeKalb County Jail since June 28, 2022.
The case saw a break in 2019 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released a facial reconstruction image of the boy. A North Carolinian, upon recognizing the image distributed by the center, provided the crucial tip that rekindled the embers of the investigation, Fox 5 Atlanta reports. Black's arrest was eventually made possible after a DNA analysis confirmed the boy's identity.
Adding to the series of bewildering testimonies, reports from Fox 5 Atlanta include statements from Hamilton's paternal aunt who, unknowingly befriended Teresa Black on Facebook while searching for her missing nephew. Black's ex-husband also took the stand, testifying about a mysterious phone call with someone he was led to believe was his stepson, "I asked my wife to call my stepson. I wanted to speak to him," Loquise Black explained. However, he later realized the call he had with someone claiming to be Teresa Black's son was in 2005, a half-dozen years after the young boy's death.
The District Attorney, Sherry Boston, emphasized the unwavering pursuit of truth in this case. "At every turn, this case ran cold, until now," Boston told reporters. As the trial unfolds, the community watches, waiting to see if justice for William Dashawn Hamilton will, finally, be served.
