A tragic snowmobile accident has claimed the life of a man in Cook County, Minnesota. The Cook County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Jeffrey Knaeble, 38, of Grand Marais, was fatally injured after his snowmobile struck a rock on Poplar Lake. The incident is believed to have occurred Thursday night, with Knaeble's body discovered by another snowmobiler the following day, according to a statement obtained by KSTP.
The area, known for its outdoor activities, is also home to treacherous hazards. The Rockwood Lodge on Poplar Lake warns visitors of "hidden boulders just under the surface of the water," as per the Star Tribune. Nonetheless, accidents like Knaeble's demonstrate, that dangers lurk for those unfamiliar with the terrain, or those simply caught by misfortune.
The Sheriff's Office further elaborated that upon finding Knaeble, it was apparent that the crash had taken place the night before the discovery. Details of the accident come as a reminder of the rising snowmobile fatalities in Minnesota, a concerning trend for local authorities and residents alike. The Star Tribune reports a significant increase in snowmobile-related deaths, with 13 occurring in the 2022-2023 winter season, up from 6 the previous year.
As the Cook County community grapples with the loss of one of their own, the Sheriff's Office conveyed that the investigation is ongoing, with more details to be released in the future.
