When family concerns about a man's erratic behavior prompted a welfare check by the Hayward Police Department, officers pulled the individual over near his residence to investigate his condition. What started as a routine check quickly escalated when it was determined the man exhibited signs of substance impairment rather than a mental health crisis.
According to an update from the Hayward Police Department's Facebook page, the man was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
The search of the vehicle didn't just turn up a DUI case. Instead, officers uncovered an armamentarium including a handgun, a substantial amount of cash, suspected narcotics, and Molotov cocktails. Officers obtained a judicial nod to search the suspect’s home to protect the public and delve deeper. There, the sweep continued but did not yield further suspicious materials. "This is a great example of the thorough investigative efforts from our patrol officers to ensure the safety of our community," the Hayward PD heralded in their social media release.
