In the dead of night, a blatant disregard for traffic laws led to a high-speed chase in Hesperia, resulting in the arrest of a 38-year-old man. Deputies from the Hesperia Police Department tried to pull over a black Toyota Camry after the driver failed to halt at a stop sign, at the junction of Danbury Avenue and I Avenue. The incident occurred on January 25, 2024, just after midnight.
The police signaled the driver to stop using lights and sirens, but he refused to oblige, igniting a 2.5-mile pursuit through residential areas, pushing speeds up to 90 miles per hour, according to a report by the Hesperia Police Department. When the chase came to an end, the driver, identified as Jose Jesus Varela, surrendered, and, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle, discovering multiple rounds of ammunition.
Varela was handcuffed and booked into the High Desert Detention Center on charges that included evading a police officer and illegal possession of ammunition. The latter charge stemmed from a previous felony conviction that stripped away his right to possess such materials.
