Houston Dental Clinic Operator Admits to $6 Million Medicaid Fraud Scheme Involving Children

In a staggering blow to the veneer of healthcare integrity, a Houston dental clinic maestro has confessed to orchestrating a $6 million Medicaid con job on the backs of unsuspecting children. According to a U.S. Attorney's Office release, 68-year-old Rene Gaviola manned the helm at Floss Family Dental Care where he admitted to billing Medicaid for a host of nonexistent pediatric dental services, spinning a web of deceit from 2018 to April 2021.

Astonishingly, Gaviola employed charlatans, lacking the sanctity of a dental license, to work on Medicaid-insured children, some days even daring to run Floss without a single dentist in sight. It emerged that he laundered hefty sums, pocketing Medicaid dollars from his enterprise into his coffers, with some transactions being north of $100,000, all while professing licensed professionals had rendered the services.

"These precious Medicaid funds were intended to provide necessary dental services to low-income children in our community, not line Gaviola’s pockets," U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani remarked on the conviction that sheds light on the dark corners of healthcare fraud. In an age when trust in medical institutions hangs by a thread, Gaviola's scheme represents a breach that runs deeper than just financial deception.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams pointed at the heart of the matter when saying, "Not only that, he also jeopardized the young patients' healthcare by putting them in the hands of unlicensed practitioners, all in the name of his greed." Gaviola's underhanded tactics took advantage of the system, and also, he knowingly imperiled children's health, turning a public assistance program into a cash cow for his personal enrichment.

Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane presided over Gaviola's guilty plea and has slated April 16 for sentencing. With a possible sentence of up to 10 years for multiple crimes including conspiracy to commit health care fraud and money laundering, Gaviola's time on the outside hangs by a thread, although he remains on bond until the hammer falls.
