US-90 Crash Near Crosby Shuts Down Westbound Lanes, Critically Injures One

Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies shut down all westbound lanes of US-90 at Lindstrom Road on Tuesday morning, diverting traffic off the main lanes as Memorial Hermann Life Flight crews responded to treat a critically injured patient. The closure hit the East Harris County corridor near the Crosby and Barrett communities, snarling the morning commute along one of the region's busiest freight and commuter arteries.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez shared details of the crash in a post on X, writing that deputies had responded to a major crash at US-90 and Lindstrom Road, that one person was critically injured, and that Life Flight was responding while westbound lanes remained shut down and traffic was diverted at Lindstrom. The specific cause of the crash, whether additional vehicles were involved, and how long the diversion stayed in place before lanes reopened were not detailed in the sheriff's post.

The air ambulance dispatched to the scene, Memorial Hermann Life Flight, is the Greater Houston area's only non-profit air medical service affiliated with a Level I trauma center. Founded in 1976 by trauma surgeon Dr. James “Red” Duke, the program has completed more than 166,000 lifesaving missions, transporting critically injured patients directly to the Texas Medical Center in Houston. In November 2024, Phillips 66 pledged up to $1.5 million in annual fuel support to the service to help fund an upgraded helicopter fleet, including North America's first medical Airbus H160, which extended Life Flight's service radius to 250 miles.

A Junction With a History of Major Shutdowns

Tuesday's closure is not the first time the US-90 and Lindstrom Road junction has forced a major shutdown. On March 28, 2024, an 18-wheeler collided with a sedan at the same intersection, spilling roughly 100 gallons of diesel fuel across a quarter-mile stretch of the highway, according to Click2Houston. That incident, which Hoodline also covered at the time, required hazmat crews and heavy-duty wreckers to clear the main lanes while drivers used frontage roads instead.

The stretch of US-90 known as the Crosby Freeway has also seen fatal incidents in recent months. On January 17, 2026, a separate severe crash on the freeway in East Harris County killed a 32-year-old construction worker and critically injured a 40-year-old coworker, who also had to be evacuated by Life Flight after the pair were struck while stripping pavement markings along the roadway.

Why East Harris County Roads Stay Risky

US-90, designated the Crosby Freeway in this stretch, is a major divided arterial highway connecting inner Houston from Interstate 610 through Barrett and Crosby toward Liberty County, serving as a principal commuter and freight corridor for northeast and east Harris County. That heavy freight traffic is part of a broader pattern: a study of 2024 Texas Department of Transportation records published in August found that Harris County led the state in commercial vehicle crashes, with 6,313 incidents accounting for 16 percent of Texas's total commercial motor vehicle collisions, much of it tied to traffic serving the Port of Houston and area industrial sectors.

Harris County's overall crash numbers underscore the stakes. TxDOT crash data for 2024 shows the county recorded 546 fatal crashes and 579 traffic fatalities, more than any other county in Texas. During closures like Tuesday's, Houston TranStar coordinates real-time traffic monitoring, lane closures, and emergency detour routes, integrating information from TxDOT, the Harris County Sheriff's Office, and local police agencies to manage the diversion.

What Drivers Are Required to Do Near the Scene

Texas law places specific obligations on drivers approaching an active crash scene like the one at Lindstrom Road. Under Texas Transportation Code § 545.157, known as the Move Over or Slow Down law, motorists approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights must vacate the closest lane or slow down 20 mph below the posted speed limit, with first-offense fines reaching up to $1,250. The Texas Legislature increased those penalties under House Bill 898 in an effort to better protect roadside emergency responders.

The condition of the critically injured patient has not been released, and the cause of Tuesday's crash remains unclear. It also was not immediately known how long the westbound diversion at Lindstrom Road stayed in effect before crews cleared the scene and reopened the main lanes.
