A man was gunned down yesterday morning during what was described as a string of robberies at a Houston gas station parking lot. The male, whose name has yet to be released, was met with fatal gunfire at approximately 12:35 a.m. at 11095 Ella Boulevard.
According to authorities, the unidentified victim was found by police officers unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, he did not survive, with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences still working to verify his identity, a statement by the Houston Police Department revealed.
Witnesses present during the incident told detectives that the male had been involved in multiple robberies directed at individuals who were busy at the gas pumps. The situation escalated when another male, who had observed the thefts, decided to intervene with lethal consequences. He shot the robbery suspect and subsequently fled the scene, according to the Houston Police Department.
The shooter, who was unharmed, didn’t remain at large for long. He later contacted the police on his own accord and met with them at the HPD Edward A. Thomas building. He provided a statement and, after consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, detectives allowed him to walk free as the incident will be presented to a grand jury for review, the police statement indicated.
As the community grapples with the events that unfolded in the once-quiet parking lot, the grand jury will soon begin to piece together the circumstances of yet another violent encounter on Houston's streets. In the meantime, the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division continues to probe the case, with Detectives K. Clark, M. Nicotra, B. Stephens, and M. Castillo leading the investigation.
