Early Tuesday morning, a violent crash involving a Houston police officer's patrol car and a Toyota Tundra resulted in both vehicles sustaining significant damage in west Houston. According to ABC13, the collision occurred on Westheimer Road near Wilcrest Drive when the Tundra, allegedly operated by an impaired driver, plowed into the stationary HPD unit at a red light.
The police car served as an unexpected brake for the Tundra, which left the white pickup heavily damaged and overturned on its side. FOX26 Houston reported that rescue crews had to extricate one person from the Tundra, who was subsequently hospitalized. The HPD vehicle sustained damage to the back passenger side, evident in the aftermath of the crash.
Both the police officer involved and the driver of the Tundra were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Video footage from the scene captured by ABC13 showed the extensive damage wrought upon the two vehicles, highlighting the Tundra's mangled state post-crash. Following the incident, authorities have indicated that charges against the truck's driver are a distinct possibility pending further investigation.
Police say the investigation points to possible impairment as a contributing factor, but confirmation awaits as the Tundra's driver remains in medical care. With the hospital still treating the driver, police are working to confirm their initial suspicions regarding his state during the accident.
