A deadly encounter at a Humble, Texas, convenience store has ended in tragedy and a murder investigation after a store clerk was fatally shot over a stolen bag of chips, as confirmed by authorities.
The fatal shooting took place around 11:30 a.m. on Friday when Humble Police responded to reports of a shooting incident, the assistant chief of the Humble Police Department, Dan Zientek, detailed in a press conference and the man, an employee at the Sunoco convenience store was found deceased inside a vehicle that had crashed into a median, according to Cincinnati.com.
The 42-year-old employee, only a few months into his managerial role at the store, was captured in surveillance footage cleaning the floors as two individuals, clad in black hoodies entered the store, they were filmed approaching the chip aisle—one seemingly slipping a bag of chips into his pants—before a verbal altercation ensued as they left the establishment and the employee tailed them by car, with the pursuit quickly escalating to gunfire, Zientek said in a statement obtained by Fox San Antonio.
Zientek described the slain employee as "a great citizen" who was simply doing his job, and lamented the loss for the community and for the futures of the two suspects, now facing jail time, “No one ever anticipates just going to work that day and not coming home,” he told Cincinnati.com. The two men reportedly fled the scene in separate directions, and as of now, police are continuing their search to apprehend the suspects linked to the senseless tragedy.
