Booze and wheel vigilantes, take note: Huntington Beach Police Department is setting up a sobriety checkpoint to snap up potentially plastered drivers. To cut down on DUI-related accidents and injuries, officers will be hitting the road on Thursday, January 18, prepped and ready to stop drivers from 6 p.m. to the early bird hour of 2 a.m. The exact location of this legal dragnet remains under wraps, but be sure it's somewhere with a notorious past for crashes and DUI arrests.
The department aims to deter, not just detain. They're looking to curb impaired driving before it starts, focusing on educating the public about the dangers of drunk driving. According to a statement obtained by the City of Huntington Beach's official website, officers will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of anything from alcohol to drugs, including prescription and over-the-counter meds that warn against operating heavy machinery.
The funding for this buzz kill blitz comes courtesy of a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
