Architectural Salvage, the city's famed vintage décor hub, is shutting down its operations after nearly 30 years of business, FOX5 San Diego reports. But before it bows out, San Diegans will have the chance to own a piece of history at deeply discounted prices during a three-day blowout sale slated for January 12 to 14.
Owner Elizabeth Scalice, who has been at the helm since the store's modest beginnings in a tiny house in Encinitas, is ready to turn over a new leaf after almost three decades. "For 28 years, we've been an integral part of San Diego’s story, helping to restore pieces of its heart and soul," Scalice expressed in a statement to FOX5 San Diego. She hopes to see the shop's legacy continue strongly even as she prepares to move on to new adventures quickly.
The Little Italy storefront, located at 2401 Kettner Blvd, has long been a trove of one-of-a-kind items, ranging from vintage bathtubs and unique light fixtures to historic doorknobs and stained art windows. The likes of Barbara Streisand, Bill Murray, and Tom Waites were counted among the establishment's diverse following, with many pieces from its collection finding homes in local restaurants across the area.
Announced on Instagram, Architectural Salvage's departure from the local retail landscape marks the end of a chapter steeped in passion for sustainable consumerism and historic preservation. "Yes it’s true.. The last 28 years have been purely magical, thank you for being on this journey with me!!!," the post read. The shop has provided a tangible link to the past for San Diego's community, allowing to integrate pieces of history into modern settings seamlessly.
As Architectural Salvage winds down, Scalice reflects on her store's impact on the community. "I love hearing the stories of homes that have been restored as a result of the shop," she told FOX5 San Diego. With plans to keep the place open through February or March, depending on inventory sell-through, the closing sale represents a final opportunity for patrons to celebrate the shop's storied existence and maybe take home a part of its heritage.
For the upcoming Celebration Sale hours, Architectural Salvage will welcome customers from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on January 12 and 13 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 14. Until its eventual closure, regular hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., remaining closed on Mondays.
