The brutal killing of an Indian gas station clerk in DeKalb County this month has prompted a response from the Indian consulate in Atlanta. Vivek Saini, 25, was fatally attacked with a hammer while working at a Chevron station on Snapfinger Road in Stonecrest. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, the suspect, identified as Julian Faulkner, 53, was found by police standing over Saini's body wielding the weapon.
Faulkner was instructed to drop the hammer, which he did before being placed in a patrol vehicle. Searches revealed he was carrying additional weapons including two knives and another hammer. A fellow store clerk managed to quickly hide and later provide surveillance footage to the police, which allegedly shows Faulkner striking Saini repeatedly. The suspect, who is reported to have been homeless at the time of the attack, now faces malice murder charges and is set to be represented by a public defender.
The Indian Consulate General has condemned the attack in strong terms. A statement posted to social media and quoted by FOX 5 Atlanta read: "We are deeply anguished by the terrifying, brutal, & heinous incident that led to the death of (Indian) National/student Mr Vivek Saini & condemns the attack in the strongest terms." The consulate also stated that they immediately reached out to Saini's family and "provided all consular assistance in sending the mortal remains back to India." Saini, who had earned an MBA from the University of North Alabama, had his remains returned to India following the incident.
This senseless act of violence has not only taken the life of a young man with promising prospects but has also left a community and family grappling with unfathomable loss. Faulkner was arrested on the spot and now waits to be tried in the Superior Court of DeKalb County. The case continues to rapidly unfold as the investigation progresses, and the public defender steps in to represent the interests of the accused.
