The fatal beating of an inmate at an overcrowded Clayton County jail has sparked an outcry from his family and calls for accountability from local officials. Johnathan Pettigrew, age 27, was killed following an attack in an overcrowded cell he was sharing due to a lack of space in the facility, as per the Clayton County Sheriff's Office.
"My brother was a beautiful soul," Michael Pettigrew said, reflecting on the man who was known for his humor and loved by many. According to a FOX 5 interview, Johnathan came from a large family who are now grieving the loss and demanding justice. They say their brother's death is a direct result of negligence on the part of the jail's administration, with Michael pointing out, "You had one job, and that was to keep my brother safe."
Abdul Woodard, the inmate transferred into Johnathan's cell on that fateful day due to the aforementioned overcrowding, is alleged to have assaulted Johnathan shortly after his arrival. Overpopulation is a longstanding issue at the Clayton County jail, which is designed to house 1,500 inmates but currently holds 1,900. In response to the growing crisis, Clayton County officials have considered using mobile trailers and requested funds for permanent expansion of the jail facilities.
In a tragic twist, as reported by 11Alive, Johnathan Pettigrew was just a week away from release after nearly two years in jail over a probation violation. His family has highlighted this fact, stating that early release could have potentially averted the fatal confrontation. Marsha Pettigrew, Johnathan's mother, has made a heartfelt plea for a reform in the system, saying, "You’re over the whole corrections facility, do it the right way... Stop killing our families under your care."
The case has drawn attention to the broader issues of inmate overcrowding and the responsibilities of jails to ensure the safety of those in their charge. Amidst the sorrow and seeking of justice, the Pettigrew family has also established a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses.
