A high school basketball game in Minneapolis ended in chaos after a brawl erupted between players from Minneapolis North and Patrick Henry High School, spilling into the stands as fans joined the fray. The scuffle broke out Tuesday night with minutes remaining on the clock, leading to a suspension of play and a hasty response from school security personnel, according to the Star Tribune.
Details provided by Minneapolis Public Schools indicated that the altercation involved students from both teams, and the melee eventually included a hundred people at its peak. The game was subsequently halted, and the situation had de-escalated by the time police arrived on scene, CBS News Minnesota reported. No arrests or injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
In the aftermath of the disruption, both schools are reportedly cooperating with the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and district leadership. Together, they are working "to bring students from both teams together and repair any harm done to our school communities or the northside community," as district spokeswoman M.A. Rosko shared. The MSHSL is expected to conduct an investigation and will issue an official report regarding the incident.
The district's policy against fighting will determine the consequences for the involved players. As tensions mounted inside the gym, fans began to partake in the fight, making the job of clearing the area increasingly difficult. Police noted that the crowd spilled into the parking lot, with over 100 individuals gathered, yet no further altercations erupted, the Star Tribune mentioned. Security and police managed to disperse the crowd without additional incidents.
