The Texas Longhorns are switching things up on the defensive end, snagging Johnny Nansen from Arizona to serve as the new co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Texas Athletics made the announcement Saturday, setting the stage for a fresh defensive strategy at the Forty Acres. Nansen leaves the Wildcats after transforming their defense from near-bottom to impressive over just two seasons.

Nansen replaces Jeff Choate who has left to head coach the Nevada Wolfpack. Choate's departure created an opening that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was quick to fill with a familiar face. Sarkisian and Nansen have a history, having worked together at Washington and USC.

The move is drawing attention not only for Nansen's track record but also for the continuity and familiarity he brings to the Longhorns' staff. "Johnny is a guy I've known for a long time, and I have so much respect for," Sarkisian told KXAN. This hiring seems to be an attempt to seamlessly keep improving a Texas defense that allowed, aside from their CFP semifinal, just 18.9 points per game in the recent campaign.

During Nansen's tenure with Arizona, the team's defense made a leap from 125th to 49th in total defense rankings, skimming yards allowed from 473.3 to 365.8 per game. These improvements helped propel the Wildcats to a successful 10-3 season capped with a win over Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl. Meanwhile, Texas' defense shone brightly in the past season, boasting the nation's No. 3 rush defense.

The Longhorns, however, will lean on Nansen's expertise, following the departure of several key players to the NFL draft and the transfer portal. "It's a dream come true to work at a place like Texas — with all its rich history and tradition — and reuniting with Sark is a big part of it, too," Nansen said, according to a statement obtained by KXAN. Sarkisian and his staff are not solely relying on Nansen's defensive acumen; they've also brought in promising new talent like Duncanville linebacker Colin Simmons and McKinney safety Xavier Filsaime, alongside veteran additions like Trey Moore from UTSA and Andrew Mukuba from Clemson, noted The Dallas News.

The Longhorns faithful will be eagerly watching to see if Nansen can replicate his previous success and bring Texas to new defensive heights. With spring ball on the horizon, all eyes will be on Nansen to see how quickly he can make his mark on this storied program.
