In a scorching display of basketball prowess, Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves set the hardwood on fire Monday night, racking up a staggering 44 points in just half a game, according to CBS News Minnesota. This scoring outburst not only established a new franchise record for the Timberwolves but also propelled Towns to the top of the scoring charts with a personal career high of 62 points by the game's end, despite the Wolves falling short in a 128-125 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
His first-half performance was near immaculate going 14 for 17 from the field, 8 of 9 from beyond the arc the Timberwolves mustered a 69-64 lead over the Hornets, as reported by U.S. News. Unfortunately, his Herculean effort wasn't enough to secure the win for Minnesota in a tightly contested matchup.
Towns finished the night with a 21 of 35 shooting sprees from the field, draining 10 of 15 three-point shots, and hitting 10 of 14 from the charity stripe. His three-point attempt at the buzzer that could have tied the game was off the mark, but that misfire hardly dimmed the luster of his historic night.
The eight three-pointers nailed in the opening half left Towns just two shy of the NBA half-game record, while his 44 points approached but didn't quite surpass the league's first-half point record of 53, shared by legends David Thompson and George Gervin Towns's flooring dominance was the talk of the evening even as the Timberwolves assessed the sting of a close defeat.
