Chaos ensued at Kennesaw State University yesterday evening after reports of an armed intruder prompted a campus-wide lockdown. The initial alert was issued at 6:20 p.m., urging students and staff to seek shelter and lock all doors and windows, as first reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Fear gripped the campus for approximately two hours until authorities gave the all-clear.
Confirmation of the lockdown was followed by intensive searches, led by Kennesaw State University Police and the Cobb County Police Department. According to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, law enforcement conducted "a comprehensive search of campus buildings and surrounding areas" before lifting the lockdown at 8:18 p.m. It remains unclear if suspects were located or any arrests were made during the operation.
The university, in an effort to reassure the public and those directly affected, confirmed that no shots were fired on campus and no injuries were reported. Students, still rattled by the event, have called for an increased security presence. "I guess I would say so because you don’t really see campus police," Nathaley Chery told FOX 5 Atlanta, highlighting the unease that lingers in the air. "Anybody can just walk onto campus and do whatever they want."
The university advised students, faculty, and staff to use the LiveSafe app to maintain a direct communication line with University Police, as noted in KSU's official statement. Meanwhile, the Cobb County Police Department is spearheading the ongoing investigation into the incident, as confirmed by 11Alive, who is awaiting further details on the possible number of suspects involved. The incident has left a mark on the university, with students and staff hopeful for measures that go beyond apps and alerts to secure their campus.
