Washington rolled out the red carpet last week for LA Mayor Karen Bass, who received top honors from the Latino Leaders Network. Singled out for her dedication to unifying diverse Los Angeles communities, Bass was awarded the prestigious Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award during the 39th Tribute to Mayors Dinner in DC.

Held in high esteem, the accolade recognizes mayors who go above and beyond in fostering community cohesion. According to a statement obtained by the Los Angeles Mayor's office, delivered on the backs of their remarks, United States Senator Alex Padilla and former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa praised Bass' commitment to social and economic justice, underscoring her efforts in advocating for Black and Brown communities.

"It is an incredible honor to receive this award," Bass reflected on her recognition. "Coalition and solidarity is how we can deliver change throughout the city – it’s much greater than one individual, and the movement for social change never ends. Solidarity is a value I was raised with – it’s how I grew up and it’s a part of my family. I'm especially honored to receive an award named for Mayor Villaraigosa and I look forward to putting it in my office next to an award named for Mayor Bradley. Thank you to the Latino Leaders Network."

Not just an ornament for her mantle, the award since Villaraigosa first received it in 2012 after leading the US Conference of Mayors, celebrates the legacy of leadership and includes Bass among a distinguished cohort of city leaders. Mayor Bass articulated pride in carrying on the tradition, intending to position her latest accolade alongside another past honor, representing the strides made in solidarity within and across LA's communities.
