In the dead of winter, these calls for aid often presage tragic outcomes, but due to the quick action of local rescue teams, this particular story veered from potential tragedy to a tale of survival.

Responding to reports of someone yelling for help, Water Patrol Sergeant Kostohryz and Deputy Archuleta arrived at Old Channel Bay, ready to confront the perilous situation. The South Lake Police Department joined the search while the Excelsior Fire Department spotted an adult male in the water, his ATV having succumbed to the treacherous ice. The dramatic rescue unfolded, "Dep. Archuleta & Excelsior Fire entered the water & brought the male to the ice shelf," as reported by the Hennepin County Sheriff.
