A series of vehicular mishaps struck Lakeville, Massachusetts on Sunday, as wintery weather transformed roads into dangerous tracks. The Lakeville Fire Department reported attending to six separate crashes within a span of a mere 40 minutes. The chaos on the roads started around noon, just as snow began replacing rain, rendering the streets slushy and treacherous for unsuspecting drivers.
Fire crews found themselves in a relentless hopscotch of emergencies, with calls pouring in about vehicles skidding off roadways. According to a WWLP report, the first of the incidents occurred at 11:47 a.m. near 72 Precinct Street, where a pickup truck strayed from its path. While responders were at the scene, additional crashes demanded their attention along both north and southbound lanes of Route 140.
Authorities have since stated that seven individuals received medical evaluations following the flurry of collisions; one among them was subsequently transported to a local hospital for further care. As reported by WHDH, the Lakeville Fire Department urged drivers to exercise extreme caution during these icy conditions.
Elsewhere in the state, Foxboro police were contending with another accident where a vehicle turned over, causing a portion of Main Street to close. A utility pole bore the brunt of the accident, its pole shattered and wires left hanging perilously. While the accident prompted detours that affected Route 140, the energy supplier was notified about the damaged infrastructure shortly after the incident at around 10:30 p.m., as reported by WHDH.
The treacherous weather is expected to relent somewhat Monday morning, but drivers are warned that falling temperatures could lead to refreezing of slush and residual precipitation, posing new risks even after the snow showers dissipate from the region.
