The Los Angeles Police Department is ramping up efforts to curb DUI incidents by setting up checkpoints and saturation patrols across the city, in a push to keep impaired drivers off the streets and reduce traffic-related fatalities. According to a press release from the LAPD Newsroom, officers will be out in force starting January 18 with a DUI Saturation Patrol in the Hollenbeck Area, followed by multiple checkpoints over the weekend.

The checkpoints will be strategically placed in areas with a history of DUI-related crashes and arrests, with locations including the intersections of Santa Monica Boulevard and Thayer Avenue, La Brea Avenue, and Obama Boulevard, as well as Western Avenue and 8th Street, these enforcement efforts represent a concerted attempt by the department to not only apprehend those driving under the influence but also educate the public about the dangers of impaired driving. The funding for these initiatives comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Impaired driving, the LAPD reminds everyone, isn't limited to just alcohol consumption; prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs, as well as marijuana—even though its use is legal for medicinal and recreational purposes in California—can impair one's ability to drive safely. The department has been emphatic in its warning that driving under the influence of any of these substances is illegal and will be dealt with accordingly.

For those caught driving under the influence, the stakes are high, with first-time offenders facing up to $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as the prospect of a suspended license signals that law enforcement agencies are taking a no-tolerance stance towards DUIs; the goal is to reduce the incidence of substance-impaired driving and the tragedies that often follow such behavior on the roads. With this announcement, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and make responsible choices, avoiding the severe consequences of a DUI charge.

In an effort to prepare the public, the LAPD has announced that while DUI checkpoint locations are set, they are subject to change or cancellation. This transparency aims to discourage impaired driving from the onset rather than solely relying on post-violation enforcement. As the weekend approaches, the LAPD is sending a clear message to drivers: Stay sober or stay off the road.
